Sam played with the miniaturized capsules in his pocket. It was a nervous habit he was well aware of. But at least he'd outgrown that awkward stage of maximizing them and then minimizing them over and over again, like clicking the top of a pen.

Which he was also guilty of when in deep thought about documentation and reports.

The referee was going over the rules. A double battle, one round, two pokémon against two pokémon, Sam vs. kris flynn-edwards. He was attempting to decide which pokémon to use, because this festival was helping him try out a plethora of his pokémon to get a better feel for them.

As the referee ended his speal, Sam turned toward the contender and held out his hand.

"Good luck."

Flynn wasn't the friendly sort. In fact, if he could help it, he preferred to be the antisocial sort. He much rathered doing odd-jobs than being carted around on Rocket missions, and this HT Tournament was no exception to that rule.

[break][break] But management had dictated. They needed moles in the tournament, just in case something interesting would crop up.

[break][break] Fuck interesting. Flynn preferred boring.

[break][break] Sighing, the twenty-eight year old found himself trudging up the beach, his Mightyena at his side. Blue could always be trusted to be the friendly one out of the pair of them — she barked in greeting at their opponent, samuel carter , just as Flynn raised a hand. "Yo."

[break][break] The referree then went on a spheal about the rules - something about double battles, oh fuck. Fuck. He hadn't thought about the rules —

[break][break] "Fucking thanks," he snapped, just as his hand closed around the other's offered handshake. Oh shit. Ugh. Might as well go along with it. "Same to you." Grumbling, Flynn stepped back.

[break][break] So much for using Blue now. She wasn't really the team work type.

[break][break] Instead, he reached into his back pocket and pulled out two balls. Light spilled from both as the forms of a Scizor and Feraligatr materialized into view. He waved at Sam. "You go, man."

The man before him seemed ... well, odd. The roster had said his name was Flynn, so Sam knew that much. But nothing of pokémon to be used had been revealed. Mixed pokémon showed that it wasn't a specialist. Sam would be considered one as he threw out two dark types. His absol and his deino.

"If you insist."

The small quip is given without much thought as Sam watches his absol immediately tense with the weight of battle, his deino giving her best roar with bristling fur.

"Let's go, get rid of the scizor first."

Psychic energy started to form around the absol, eyes glowing red as a future sight began. To cover her, deino let out a mighty roar and moved her body quickly and with great strength, thanks to her ability to hustle. It lowered her accuracy, but it allowed for her to have raised attack as she closed in on the scizor with a dragon rush.

the guy he was facing was... weird.

[break][break] but like, in a good way. frankly, flynn was relieved that the other hadn't made any sort of comment about his blunder. that would've been fucking awful.

[break][break] he nodded as the other politely agreed to start, and waited as the other started the battle. with direction from their trainer, they immediately began to move. fortunately, ruby was faster. the scizor's wings buzzed with the power of AGILITY, body phasing into multiple parts. the dragon rush phased into one of the clones, which pixelated into thin air the moment the attack hit.

[break][break] ice crackled around ivy's fist in the same moment as she used ice punch on the offender, ready to defend her partner at a moment's notice.

"So she's the gatekeeper, is she?"

Sam's words fell slowly and he furrowed his brows. Two powerful hits to that feraligatr could likely help them weed out unnecessary damage, like that dangerous ice punch that had just frozen his deino.

The cry that deino let out when hit and frozen, absol's protective instincts flared up into full force.

"Take her out!"

The black horn of her head slowly gaining psychic energy. She leapt up, flinging her body and sending a powerful psycho cut the water-type's way.

"uh... sure," flynn said, a bit caught off guard. gatekeeper, huh? he'd never thought about things like that -- not in those terms, at least. it reminded him of those kids in highschool who were part of clubs he never really understood, dressing up as magicians and shit. not that flynn judged them for it - just always seemed like a world he didn't understand, out of his control.

[break][break] "more like a boat." she was always good for traversing the difficult seas, either on work or in his free-times. flynn adjusted his footing, deciding that if they were gonna be stuck here they might as well talk. "you - uh - ever go diving?"

[break][break] was that his version of a pick-up line?

[break][break] "ruby, block!" flynn's words carried, sharp and sure, over the beach summer air. thanks to her former agility, the scizor was able to flit over to the scene of the crime that much more quickly. her wings buzzed, arms flashing out in an x-scissor pattern as she threw herself in line of the psycho cut attack.

[break][break] speed was her virtue, not ivy's.

[break][break] the mossy ferligatr turned, much too slowly, ice crackling still over her fingertips from her previous move. she let out a growl of startled surprise as she watched her comrade take the hit, thrown to the floor in an instant by the critical hit she just received. luckily, the move wasn't super effective - the opposite, actually.

[break][break] ivy let out a roar of fury, as the ground rumbled beneath her in the start of an earthquake.

The fact that this guy was carrying on a conversation with Sam during the battle was impressive enough. It seemed rather unorthodox, really. But then again, they hadn't gained much distance unlike most battles.

"What, diving?"

That earthquake stole his attention and had Sam's eyes widening. Deino wasn't going to last much longer after this, not with how she was frozen-- but luckily, absol's previous future sight was coming into play.

Something otherworldly pulsed out, moving the deino out of the way. Seemed as though the future sight was used not to hurt a pokémon, but to save it. Deino was rushed by the energy and though not harmed, the earthquake was avoided, and hopefully she'd thaw out soon enough.

Instead of taking it personally, absol carefully watched the two before her, preparing to detect whatever moves were to be next. And with deino so far away, hopefully she would be the only target for them to hit.

a pause. it's awkward.

[break][break] "yeah. diving."

[break][break] flynn was never good at small talk, anyways.

[break][break] he's more than happy to direct his attention back to the battle, watching as some unforeseen force moves the deino out of the way of harm. flynn tries his best not to look impressed — it's difficult.

[break][break] "alright ruby. let's give them something to look at. " he clears his throat. "x-scissor, let's go!" nodding, the scissor flies skyward and then crosses it's arms, a bright red "x" smashing down in the direction of the absol. "ivy, dragon claw!" the feraligatr gives a mighty roar as it runs forward as well, cocking her arm back and aiming a dragon claw in the same direction as the absol.

That second hit, the dragon claw, caused the absol to grunt. She took the brunt of it, having detected the x-scissor and moved. There was no way she was going to just spam detect over and over to make the battle last forever. So instead, she twisted her body and used a SHADOW CLAW on the scissor, bouncing on her haunches and toward the deino who was very slowly thawing out.

Sam couldn't help how his blood boiled a bit. This was turning into a decent battle. The faster they could get that scissor situated, the faster they could avoid how slow the feraligatr was-- in theory, of course.

the shadow claw goes for ruby in an unexpected way. the scizor flinches with pain as it's thrown back against the sad, wings beating pitifully against the pavement. the attack hits her critically, pain blooming in her side. is exoskeleton cracked?

[break][break] inexplicably, in a way to make herself feel better, her body glows with light. sunny day parts the cloud above, warming her. it's not healing but the warm sun feels good on her shell as she lays in the sand.

[break][break] "aw, shit." the sun likely makes it hot enough for the ice to melt. "damn, ruby."

[break][break] with a roar, ivy beats her chest. she grabs the ground and uses earthquake to create cracks in the sand.

The ground quakes and Sam can feel the trembling. That feraligatr was underestimated and for that, he's paying the price. But luckily, blue and red energy begins to swirl beneath that ice, the sun helping to melt and weaken it. Deino's free from his ice confines, letting loose in an OUTRAGE against the feraligatr.

"Push through absol!"

Sam's words caused absol to focus. That earthquake had nearly caused her to fall through the sand, but her body manages to hang on. She lunges herself forward with ghostly phantasma encasing her claw. She times her SHADOW CLAW to hit at an angle that will hopefully allow for the deino's attack not to miss.

the sun does end up aiding in the ice melting.

[break][break] "ivy, careful!"

[break][break] it's too late.

[break][break] the deino's outrage crashes in the feraligatr, who takes in the damage with a grunt. red and blue flames lick her jaw, smoke petering out from the two when they part. the absol comes not soon after, it's shadow claw tearing flesh away from the feraligatr who lets out a roar of complaint.

[break][break] flynn scowls. "ivy, agility! ice claw!" the feraligatr roars. her body blurs, attempting the agility and ice claw as flynn requests, but she's too weak. she's taken too many hits. in a matter of seconds, she slumps, head rolled into the back of her head, laying on the floor not unlike her team-mate.

[break][break] the brunette sighs. he knows when he's lost.

[break][break] red light encompasses the both of them. flynn's gaze flicks up to his competitors. "good job, dude."

the victory feels good. sam lets it settle into his mind, in turn it sinks into his bones. he's proud of his team, shows as much in the way he gives them small pets of affection before returning them both to their capsules.

the congratulations offered is returned with a hand shake and a polite smile he's practiced a thousand times within the day to day job of being mt. pyre's crypt keeper.

"thanks, you weren't an easy win. those two work well together. if the ice wouldn't have melted, it would have been your victory."

"maybe next time i'll have you face off against blue. she's my partner." his gaze flickers over to the mightyena at his side, who barks at sam. her tail sweeps behind her in a friendly wag. "though, she's not the best at teamwork." ironic, likely, considering what he just said.
